Cabrillo opens the 2022 football season at home on Friday night, welcoming in the Hawkins Hawks. This will be a rematch from last year’s season opener, which was the head coaching debut for Cabrillo’s Shane Gonzales.
The Jags ended up on the wrong end of a 36-0 final score, but were playing their first game in nearly two years and had some understandable rust and inexperience. The Hawks won five of their first six games last season and ended up with a 6-5 record after going just 1-3 in the Coliseum League.
Hawkins’ junior quarterback Chad Sabal threw for four touchdowns in this matchup last season, but he transferred to Dorsey in the offseason, meaning the Hawks will feature a new signal caller in this matchup.
On the other side, Cabrillo will have a more experienced QB than they had in 2021, as junior Luis Haro went from taking his first varsity snaps at Hawkins a season ago, to now having a full season of varsity ball under his belt.
Just like last season, the Jaguars aren’t very deep, meaning their conditioning will be tested in the season opener. This matchup should be a good indicator of how much progress the Jags have made under Gonzales from game one to year two, and having a supportive home crowd on the West Side certainly wouldn’t hurt Cabrillo’s chances.
