It’s been quite a week for the Cabrillo Football program. From the highs of a last-second touchdown to go 4-0 for the first time ever, followed by the heartbreaking news of having to forfeit those wins.
But one fact remains the same: no team has been able to beat the Jaguars on the field this season. That’ll get put to the test on Friday night at 7 p.m. in their Moore League opener at Compton College.
Compton High will be the toughest opponent yet for Cabrillo, due in large part to an experienced, physical offensive line. The Tarbabes are 2-2 on the year, losing back-to-back games against Paramount and Eisenhower. One key in those games was the loss of senior running back Erick Barrios to injury. If Barrios is back healthy, he’ll be a tough guy to contain in Compton’s run-heavy attack.
Defensively, reigning Moore League Defensive Lineman of the Year, Kingston Moa, is an absolute terror for Compton. He’ll be looking to disrupt Cabrillo’s running game and give QB Luis Haro no time to look down field for his weapons on the outside.
Jags freshman WR D’Jon Pittman had a breakout performance in last week’s win against Lynwood, hauling in the game-winning, 56-yard TD with 11 seconds left. Cabrillo may need to get clever on offense to get him the ball quicker and give him some chances to make a play.
Last year’s meeting between these two teams was all Compton as they won 48-0. The Tarbabes have won four straight against Cabrillo since 2017.
This Jags’ team has certainly improved from recent seasons, but have they made enough strides up front to get Compton’s offense off the field?
